Inquiry: Human beings communicate with others through diverse and unique expressions of art
You can also have a look at Edmodo where I have prepared for this Activity, the Code for the group is jn42ny.
Lesson Plan
- In Class - Activate the students thinking:
The teacher puts in a hat quotes on the topic “Art” by many philosophers, thinkers, artist, and even maybe teachers, parents or other students in the school. The whole class sits in a circle on the floor, and students pick one by one a paper with a quote. They read it out loud to the other students, reflect on the quote and individually share their thoughts with the other students. The teacher encourages them to start a brainstorm on the what art means enabling them to be aware of the others’ opinions, and it also allows them to be critical with their responses.
Once each student has done the activity, they all sit down at their desks and write in their Reflection Journal a definition of Art that they individually have come up with.
- At Home - To start inquiring
Students will use Edmodo, and in the folder for this Unit click on the Activity named At Home. They will find in this folder three links:
- Performing Arts: On this link, students will find several videos, they have to pick one of them and visualize it.
- Looney Tunes Funny Paintings Scene: Students will watch this short animation and reflect on different types of art they can spot.
- Elements of visual Art: They will pick a couple of these short videos on the playlist and watch it.
When they have watched all the material, they will then go to the folder My Quizzes and reflect on the lines of inquiry proposed for this Unit: “What does art mean to you? What do we want to achieve through art? In how many ways do we express ourselves? What different channels can you notice communication coming from? What are the possible barriers to communication? Is it my vision of life the same as my classmates? What do you think makes it so divert and unique? What is your own personal way of communicating feelings, beliefs and ideas?”. Students their thoughts on this platform, so the teacher can see how they are doing with the activities, how they are finding it and get some feedback on the point of learning they find themselves in.
- In Class - Stations
The class will be divided into 3 groups, that would work in different stations with different purposes, and here students will find their assignments.
One would focus on individual learning, a second one on working with a partner on creative problem-solving through interactive games, and a third one focused on group inquiry. The three stations would have different, but related to the Unit tasks:
- Station one: This station would allow students to work individually and would give them some time where they could sit or lay down on the carpet and read, draw, write, or just relax. The reading, writing and the drawing would be related to the Unit. As an example, Draw 50 Animals, Children’s book of music, or ¿Quién fue Pablo Picasso?.
- Station two (Edmodo Folder - Work In Pairs): This space would be for working in pairs and the aim would be problem-solving and creative activities, using an interactive support (iPad). This would take place in a big rounded table where they can sit next to whoever they prefer to work with and solve problems creatively related to the line of inquiry. Example: To have a virtual tour in a museum (MET or Louvre) and based on that experience brainstorm idea on art and communication, creating a Word Cloud that would later be hanged up on the wall and presented with the partner.
- Station three (Edmodo Folder - Groups): This station would be to work in big groups for the inquiries. Each group would be assigned a couple of inquiry questions for the Unit. After having visualized the videos at home, students will discuss in groups the thoughts they kept on the Reflection Journal and share it with the other members of the group. Students would agree on 3-4 final opinions, ideas and feelings on the inquiry lines assigned to each group and write them on a big newsprint that would hang on the wall.
Once students have been in all the stations, a big group discussion will follow where the three groups will share and their ideas and thoughts on the topic of Art and answer to the inquiries. While the students of the other groups will state their reactions and opinions on what the other groups have come up with.
- In Class - Summative Assessment
Students will individually have time to recognize and get inspired by different expressions of art as a way of communication (visual art, music, performing arts…). In the length of 6 weeks, they will reflect, create and shape a message into an expression of art, choosing the format with which they feel more comfortable with. They will present that expression to their classmates and share opinions on the other classmate's expressions.
